NOTES: The Event Date/Time entry is for the purpose of letting you know how current the provided information is. This it not a race calendar, and while I will attempt to keep the information current, it will not always be possible. The course information is supplied by RDs, ultra runners and other interested parties, and while everyone attempts to provide accurate information, **IT HAPPENS! Always check with the Race Director for the latest information.

Location: Lake Merced, San Francisco
Nearest Town(s): San Francisco, CA
Event Date/Time: 4/21/01; 6:30AM
Course Type: Multiple Loop; Each loop is 4.5 miles
Surface: The main surface is an asphalt multi-use path that circles the lake. Next to the path there is a gravel path that can be used for most of the distance around the lake (there are a couple of short sections where you have to get back on the path). The path can get busy with bicycles, other runners, etc.
Description: Loops, loops, and more loops. Really, it's not so bad. The path undulates as it passes around the lake. There is a slight climb from the Finish area followed by a gentle downhill to the half way point. From there, it's flat and slightly uphill to the Finish area. The weather is usually cool and it can be a little windy on the back half. In general it's a pretty fast course.
Elevation Change: 725 for the entire race (about 50 feet per loop).
Altitude Range: 20' - 100'
Longest Climb: NA
Time Limit/Cutoffs: 11 hours for 50 miles. None for 100 Km. (all runners have to be through 50 miles in 11 hours).
Aid Stations: Two per loop; all the usual and unusual ultra fuel and food, Conquest thirst quencher & Clif Bars

Additional Information: You can run either race, but if you go beyond 50 miles, you are in the 100k. This means if you stop at 55 miles, you are a DNF in the 100k and that's it (you aren't a 50 mile finisher). We will get 50 mile splits for all 100 k runners. It gets dark about 13 1/2 hours into the race. We walk about one mile to the start from the Finish area. The 50 Mile finishes about 1.5 miles from the 100 km finish (one-half mile past the start area). You can either walk back or we'll give you a ride. It's confusing, but this is how the courses are certified.
